EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The following report is a detailed summary of what the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) knows to date about the fleet of thirteen British transports scuttled in Newport Harbour in 1778. It summarizes why the ships were sunk and what happened to them afterwards, how RIMAP began the search for their remains and located potential sites, how RIMAP mapped and completed preliminary surveys of these located sites and predicts the locations of the rest, what the present studies tell us about the ships, and suggestions for future research.
